A Decade of Biomass Measured with Necklaces

As a 10 year survey, in 2018 we created 1523 necklaces with chains, that were used to measure the circumferences of each tree. In the installation they are tied together and suspended in a circular form. The footprint of the circle equals the accumulated diameter of all tree trunks. Therefore the installation represents the biomass accumulated by the 1523 trees that were planted in 2008.

The void space could be seen as a phantom of the gaseous transformation of carbon dioxide into oxygen during the creation of biomass through photosynthesis. The work evokes engagement with the complexity of ecological problems through an aesthetic experience and imagination.

A photogram is a photographic image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a photographic paper. Areas of the paper that have received no light appear white; those exposed to light appear black.
